A fantastic 4K gimbal camera that’s almost perfect
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is taking the mainstream camera culture by storm, outshining even the Fujifilm X100VI among film simulation fans. Its popularity is evident across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where it inspires a wave of creativity among users. Both professional and casual creators are diverting from their typical content to explore the device’s potential, which extends beyond simple vlogging to filming weddings and creating short films with cinematic aspirations.
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a compact 4K video camera integrated with a built-in gimbal that delivers professional-grade stabilised footage at a significantly lower cost than traditional gimbal and camera setups. Building on the success of its predecessor, the Pocket 2, DJI continues to offer gimbal-stabilised 4K video but with notable enhancements in the Pocket 3. These improvements include better handling, a more user-friendly interface, and enhanced performance. This makes the Pocket 3 an attractive option for vloggers and content creators, and even professionals seeking a portable secondary camera (B-cam).
I tested the Creator Combo, the only additional package currently offered at $669 / £619, and it’s definitely worth the investment. This bundle not only includes the camera and all standard accessories but also features the wireless DJI Mic 2 with a windscreen, a wide-angle lens, a clip-on battery pack/grip, a mini tripod, and a durable carrying case. Purchasing these items separately would approach $800, making the bundle a smart financial choice.
I strongly recommend getting at least a microphone and a battery pack. Since the Pocket 3 doesn’t have a removable battery, the included DJI battery pack is essential. While third-party mics are an option, they require DJI’s accessory adapter for wired connections, as only DJI mics connect wirelessly to the Pocket 3. Opting for the Creator Combo is the most convenient and cost-effective choice.
Despite some limitations, like a 2X digital zoom and lack of waterproofing, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3’s portability, ease of use, and ability to produce beautifully stabilised footage make it a compelling choice. It’s an inviting tool for anyone looking to bridge the gap between smartphone and professional-grade filming, encouraging even the most reluctant creators to capture and share their experiences. This device has quickly become as essential as my wallet, keys, and phone whenever I head out, thanks to its fun, straightforward functionality and the impressive results it delivers.
What impresses me most about the Pocket 3 is its incredible versatility. It’s a fantastic choice for a wide range of users—from vloggers capturing outdoor adventures to YouTubers and streamers creating content at home. It’s also ideal for recording family vacations or everyday moments. Moreover, it can serve as a reliable secondary camera for professional settings. For instance, a wedding photographer might use it to film dynamic scenes on the dance floor, or it could enhance my own toolkit for creating smooth product videos. If any of this sounds appealing, the Pocket 3 is definitely worth considering.
