new monitor time - need some wisdom!

hey everyone, i'm finally upgrading my monitor! been rocking the same one for like 5 years, so i'm pretty out of the loop on whats good now. i'm primarily a gamer, so refresh rate is important to me, right? i've seen some 144hz and even 240hz monitors, but is the difference really noticeable? i'm also a bit unsure about panel types. i've heard va panels have good contrast, but tn panels are faster. ips seems like a good middle ground, but are they all created equal? plus, curved or flat... opinions needed! mostly, i'm just hoping to hear about your personal experiences. what monitors are you using and what do you love (or hate) about them? any advice on what to look for (or avoid!) would be awesome. thanks in advance!
