new monitor time!! help a gamer out?

hey everyone, so i'm finally upgrading my monitor. been rocking the same old thing for like, five years, haha. i mostly play fast-paced games, shooters and stuff like that, so i'm thinking a high refresh rate is a must. is 144hz really that much better than 60hz, or is it just hype? i've seen some monitors advertising really fast response times, like 1ms, and i'm wondering if that makes a big difference in actual gameplay or if it's just marketing speak. i'm not really sure about panel types either, like ips vs tn vs va, what's the deal with those? any of you hardcore gamers have personal recommendations or experiences you can share? i'm looking for something that'll really make my games pop, without breaking the bank, of course. thanks in advance for any advice!
